TRIPADVISOR 5.0/5.0 *****
lavapiés
We propose that you learn more about the neighborhood of Lavapiés and bordering areas from the urbanistic, historical and architectonic point of view. We recommend that you save some time before the aperitif at the Rastro to walk together doing an alternative architecture tour in Madrid. You will learn the history of theaters such as Figaro, Calderon or Pavón, cinemas such as Ideal, and cafés, markets, restaurants, museums or residential buildings in the authentic heart of Madrid. The magazine Time Out has choosen our neighbourhood as “the coolest in the world in 2019“. A mixture of local life, traditions, multiculturalism and gentrification in a moment of transformation.
municipal
print
Works of architects such as Linazasoro, Muguruza or Jean Nouvel, or street artists such as Boa Mistura or Okudart will be on our tour together. Small hidden gems such as the Municipal Print Works, a magnificent rationalist industrial building from 1930 or the latest place in the area to have a drink like Sala Equis, the last porn cinema in Madrid. One of the stops that will surprise you, a prison of the Inqusition, hidden on the basement of an old “corrala” in the heart of Lavapies St.
rastro
flea market
We come to the Sueca Palace, known because of the Spanish series “The Ministry of the Time”, near the end of its rehabilitation and just before we get to Cascorro Square and the history of how the famous street market called Rastro began, combining the most antique and the latest vintage furniture in the new Santa Ana Street Market next to the antique dealers stores of a lifetime.
tabacalera
temporary closed
From there to the Tabacalera, the next venue of Reina Sofia Contemporany Art Museum, wich will remind you of some industrial buildings in other cities such as Berlin and where you can see some of the best works of street art on its walls. Doctour Fourquet Street with its new art galleries to the extension of Reina Sofía Museum by Jean Nouvel, returning to Lavapiés by Argumosa Street, the “maritime walk” of the neighborhood, visiting some of its corralas, the most typical type of housing around a courtyyard where theater and zarzuela were born.
markets
Before finishing, we will show you the spectacular renovation of the Pías Schools of San Fernando, transformed into a UNED library, according to Linazasoro’s project, next to one of the most popular corralas in the neighborhood. We will end our walk together at a local market where you can have an aperitif with a vermouth and tapas while we talk about everything we have seen and I give you some recommendations for your stay in Madrid if you are visiting.

FAQ
No. Our architours are guided by a local architect, but they are offered in a colloquial language that will help you understand each style in its historical context, in a didactic way, whether you are an architect or a mere amateur.
If you are an architect, student of architecture or work in the field, let us know with your booking. In that case, we can propose you a tour in which we go deeper or use a more technical language. We recommend you book a private or tailored tour, just for you, adapted to your interests.
The guided visit with a local architect who will give you the artistic historical context of the buildings, accompanied by plans and historical photos to understand the urban development of the city in each period.
Yes, the acces to all the buildings are included in the price of our architour.
No, but you could drink or eat something in any of our stops. You will decide if you want to consume anything.
Most of our architours are led in English but also in Spanish.
They will be in the majority language of the attendees. If you do not master one of the two languages, we will always offer you an alternative schedule in the language you prefer before.
We do not mix languages in the same tour to avoid the experience taking too long and not enjoying it as we want.
In 2020 the art gallery closed due to renovation works. In the summer of 2023, the social center has closed due to consolidation works in the building.
The Rastro is only included on Sundays and public holidays, in the morning, but the rest of the week we will take you to visit the best antique stores and the best interior design stores that open every day in the neighborhhod.
We will finish having a drink at San Fernando Market or close to Lavapiés Square.
Schedules and some buildings included may be altered by private events outside of architoursmad. We will always offer you an alternative to do it another day or visit other rooftops with the same spectacular views of Madrid.
If the schedules that appear on the tour page do not suit your availability, contact us with your request.
We ask you to be on time at the meeting point, at least 5 minutes before the architour starts.
Unfortunately, some buildings and some parts of the route are not always wheelchair accessible. The route may include narrow sidewalks and cobblestoned streets. Please contact us to discuss in more detail your mobility concerns so that we can best advise and we will try to design an adapted route in a tailored tour.
“My partner and I were looking for something off the beaten track to do in Madrid and absolutely loved this tour!
Emilio is extremely knowledgeable and started with a very helpful introduction to the history of Madrid’s development under different empires and dynasties. We saw numerous beautiful buildings in Lavapiés and got to learn about their architectural styles and as a bonus, Emilio walked us through some of the area’s street art.
I’d highly recommend this experience and I hope I can be back in Madrid and go on Emilio’s other tours as he is a great person to get to know and learn from and is really passionate about architecture and Madrid!.”
